Research suggests that the best way to present a two-sided message is to give the arguments that support your position first. You should organise those arguments, beginning with the weakest and ending with the strongest. Then present the opposing argument, beginning with the strongest and ending with the weakest. In this way, you take advantage of the learner’s tendency to remember the most recent thing they read: the strong supporting argument and the opponent’s weak argument.

Meet the demands of the situation. Some situations clearly demand more formal written materials. More formal language choices and more correct sentence structure are demanded by formal situations. You should determine the expectations of your learners and adapt the language to suit them. Most experts agree that the language should be one step more advanced than that of your training audience.

Develop a Clear Structure

Grab the Audience / Training Group

You should give the trainee a reason to read on. Give them a road map to follow. You should begin with an introductory statement or two. In general, an effective introduction does three things:

It catches the learner’s attention and sets a tone for the message

It provides your learners with a reason for reading

It gives your learners a road map or quick sketch of the message.
